sewing

The boys did lots of sewing today. I think it started yesterday morning when I had to mend one of Freddie's socks before he put it on, and Fergus mended Pink Snakey. Fergus got some bits of fabric and cut them into rectangles and patchworked them together. He made it onto a cushion for Gnomey and he also made a quilt. I just had to keep threading needles, which was just about all I was capable of today.

Freddie wanted to make a peg dolly, which he loved playing with, and also a cushion. They are both pretty good with real needles, and seem to really enjoy it. Fergus's stitching is getting really good now.

It got me thinking about learning to read and write and learning skills like sewing: how they are related, their relative importance, and how they are not always learned in the same order. I was just chatting earlier with a friend about reading, when I realised all of hers can now read, but she reminded me how unimportant it is to get them reading at an early age, mentioning two friends that were 8 and 13 before they even started, the second one going straight onto a University course within months. And how valuable that time is before they start to read, when they can still be so absorbed in their imagination. O, isn't home education wonderful? The more I do it the more I can't imagine a better way.

My Willow is 8 and a half and is beginning to read now...at the same time, Ash has just turned 4 and I can tell he is already getting it by 'osmosis'...am a little afraid that he will over take Willow and then Willow will feel a bit sad about that.

Meadow was *thinking* ..ooh..I think she was about 6-7 when she learnt to read...she literally woke up one morning and could read..and she now reads at least three big books a week....she's reading stuff that is way above her age 'norms'.

I was reading at 3-4 and find it difficult to get through a whole book nowadays..lol.

Yes, I think Fergus and Freddie may well learn at the same time, although 3 years apart, but it could work out well. I was taught as soon as I could talk at around 18 months! But always struggled later, especially reading aloud. I can do it now though- It's great to have the opportunity to read all those childrens bokks I never got round to!
