bonfire night

This afternoon Fergus and Freddie picked up some of last night's garden fireworks while the washing dried, amazingly, in the November breeze. It turned out that they had seen the Hebden firework display quite well from their hillside vantage point, behind the mill, plus many others in the distance.
Later on we wandered down to the local firework display: fireworks, no bonfire, except for the virtual one displyed on a large square screen at the far end of the cricket pitch. The first half hour involved watching this, and eating pie and peas. It was free to get in. Apparently there was an incident a few years ago, in which some children got injured whilst messing with the fire, and the parents tried to sue. As a result they stopped charging and then stopped the fire altogether. What a shame. It was a bit cold without a real fire. The fireworks lasted a long time and were in two halves (more time to buy drinks at the bar). Most of the second half Freddie was inside my coat saying he wanted to go now, as were some other children, and Fergus had his hands over his ears. I didn't think it was that loud, but it was quite windy.
Maybe it was good thing that they didn't go to the big display last night. Anyway it would have cost a tenner to actually get in and it was full of noisy fairground rides. Now I remember why it is sometimes better to have your own bonfire night celebration- its not about making money. I was going to have a small fire tonight; maybe I will, after all, one day this week or next weekend, with the few left over fireworks.Having said all that, I did actually enjoy watching the fireworks myself, those little sparks of colour bursting out in the dark sky, making you oooh! and aah!
